CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Casen couldn't calm down. His mind whirled, from the moment Tam started to cry to when he fell asleep against him.

Tam's life had been unfair, right from the beginning. From his first boyfriend to his last, men had only ever treated him like shit. They had used, hurt, and endangered him, from the moment they caught his attention.

What was worse was that the two people Casen thought of as kind considerate and loving had treated him the worst.

Grayson had been negligent and selfish, unconcerned with how Tam felt or what he went through, just because he was jealous of how close he'd once been to Konnor. He hadn't fought back when Tam's jealousy and anger got the best of him because he hadn't wanted to hurt Konnor or someone he thought Konnor loved. He'd never let Tam know it was wrong, either.

Konnor had been worse. He hadn't known or cared to know anything about Tam, except what he could do in bed. Then he blamed him for all his troubles, treated him like his personal servant and claimed Tam was the one who couldn't let go. He made his life in the fraternity house unbearable. When he'd shown how it all affected him when he lashed out at Grayson without thinking, Konnor labelled him a monster.

Casen knew that if Grayson had let on how wrong it was and how much it hurt, Tam would have stopped. He hadn't meant to hurt him; he'd just been locked in his own head, too consumed by grief and anger to see what he was doing. Not that he thought it was Grayson's fault, either.

But he knew things, things that Konnor and Grayson had never meant to tell him. He knew them from overhearing them talking, from Mack and from Levi; things that let him know how much Grayson and Konnor had flaunted their relationship in Tam's face, unnecessarily. They did it to hurt him, to send the message that he was to back off. But for all the great grades and street smarts they had, not even with their combined brain cells could they figure out that all Tam needed was honesty.

If either one had been honest about what they wanted, about what role Tam played in that future or had even bothered to talk to Tam to find out how he felt or let him down easy, none of the bad stuff had to happen.

Casen had studied psychology; he knew that blind grief could make a person do things that weren't normally in their nature. That's what happened when Tam beat up Grayson; he acted out because he was losing the love and attention of the guy he loved. He was learning that his love wasn't enough and that Konnor didn't love him back.

Wouldn't any other man, who had suffered the same routine humiliation, anger and betrayal, from every boyfriend he'd ever had, react the same way?

Unable to hold back his anger, Casen slipped out from underneath Tam. He shifted his arm and put a pillow under Tam's arm and cheek.
